TO BETTER LEARNING IN A FOUR-TERM YEAR
06

For decades Tasmania's school system had three terms each year.

All other Australian states had a four term year, as did many of the world's highest performing school systems. It took a Greens Minister to take Tasmania's schools to a four term year.

With a three term year, we were seeing spikes in absentee rates from our students, as well as teachers under pressure, towards the end of each term.

Students need to be at school for as many days as possible to help them learn, and a four term year helps to bring absence rates down.

It’s about making a friendlier learning environment for students and teachers.

International research shows that learning loss occurs during long holidays, especially for students from lower socio economic backgrounds.

Our summer holidays are now one week shorter, reducing learning loss for our students.

Not everyone in Tasmania wanted a four term year, and It took a Greens Minister focused on improving educational outcomes for our kids to make the decision.

I'm glad that you guys are looking out for our school kids. How can I help?
