Education has always been one of Tasmania’s biggest policy challenges. For too long, our educational outcomes have lagged far behind the rest of the country.
But, under a Greens Education Minister, Tasmania has finally turned the corner. Where’s the proof? In our test results. [1]
For the last two years, our students have improved faster than the national average in every single NAPLAN measure.
And it’s no accident.
We placed special attention on children’s early learning, because the evidence shows that the early years are where we can make the most difference.
For the first time, our nation-leading Launching into Learning program is available in every government primary school in Tasmania. [2]
There is still some way to go, but we are finally showing steady improvements – particularly among students from disadvantaged backgrounds.[3]
We have also provided more support for teachers and school leaders by creating Tasmania’s first Professional Learning Institute.[4]
And we now have a school improvement plan in every single government school, which means that our educators have a clear framework to continue the improvement we are already seeing.
Accessible and affordable education is critical to Tasmania’s prosperity and quality of life. It is the key to creating our own future.
